Early this week—the first week of December—popular grocery store chain Trader Joe’s announced a voluntary recall of several products over concerns of listeria contamination. Fortunately, there have been no reports of any illness related to the potential contamination but the company said they are announcing the recall out of an abundance of caution.
The products listed in the recall—which is quite broad—include sushi, salads, and other ready-to-eat meals from Okami and Trader Joe’s. They include:
- Brown Rice Classic California Roll
- Seafood Combo
- California Rolls
- Spicy California Rolls
- Supreme California Roll
- Spicy Supreme California Roll
- Supreme Combo
- Supreme Sampler
- Banh Mi Inspired Noodle Bowl
- Tempura Shrimp Crunch Rolls
- Tofu Spring Rolls
- Classic California Rolls with Brown Rice & Avocado
- Queso Fundido Spicy Cheese Dip
- Shrimp Spring Rolls
- Smoked Salmon Philly Roll
- Smoked Salmon Poke Bowl
It helps to note that each of these products have been packaged in plastic trays with clear lids. This makes them easy to identify, so the company is urging that everyone should confirm if they are in possession of any of these products and, of course, refrain from eating them; and discard them or return them to a Trader Joe’s store for a full refund.
The recall notice also advises that these products could be in stock in most states throughout America. The products are available for sale in: Alabama, Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, Nebraska, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, North Carolina, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, South Carolina, Tennessee, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, D.C., West Virginia and Wisconsin.
If you did not know, listeria monocytogenes is a microorganism that can cause serious—and even fatal—infections. For most healthy adults the short-term symptoms include high fever, stiffness, abdominal pain/cramping, severe headache, diarrhea, and nausea. In pregnant women the infection can result in miscarriage or stillbirth; it can be fatal among the very old and very young or among those who have compromised immune systems.
