Popular scotch maker The Glenlivet has revealed their newest product is quite different from their traditional liquor. According to a recent story in Food & Wine, The Glenlivet is launching a new pod-like cocktail capsule made from seaweed. The aquatic plant, of course, is one of our planet’s most renewable resources, and is easy to manipulate into a casing for the liquid inside.
The seaweed casing pods have been developed by a sustainable packaging company called Notpla. These casings are filled with 23 mL of Scotch whiskey to create a “glassless” cocktail that eliminates the need for glass, of course, but also for ice or even stirring.
Director of The Glenlivet, Miriam Eceolaza explains, “As a brand that celebrates originality, we are always looking to break the conventions that have determined how single malt Scotch has historically been enjoyed. The Glenlivet Capsule Collection does exactly that, and we’re excited to see how people react when they try our glassless cocktails. Our founder, George Smith, always went against the grain, bucking tradition and doing things differently. The Glenlivet Capsule Collection continues his pioneering spirit today.”
As you might expect, this unconventional cocktail drinking experience has caused quite a stir on the internet, no pun intended. Of course, anyone who might be more familiar with the concepts of molecular mixology—a high-concept trend to be sure—this type of delivery system is not quite as new or novel. Still, a major brand making a shift like this is certainly something worth the buzz.
