No matter how much you are worth in life, both billionaires Warren Buffet and Bill Gates agree that the ultimate test of how successfully you have lived your life is in the love that people who surround you actually have for you. It is not in how big your net worth is.
Warren Buffet, CEO of Berkshire Hathaway and one of the richest men in the world turned 89 years old last Friday, August 30th, says that when you reach his age, no matter how big your bank account is, if no one thinks well of you – your life is a disaster not a success.
Back in 2017, when Buffet and billionaire co-founder of Microsoft, Bill Gates, both appeared on the same stage at Columbia University (CU) during a PBS talk hosted by Charlie Rose, a question was posed by a student as to what life lessons they have learned as far as relationships that are important.
Buffet, a 1951graduate of CU, said that was a very important question because a person will go in the direction of the people they associate with and so one should associate with people who are better than one’s self.
Both Buffet and Gates agree that choosing your life partner is one of the most important decisions you can make. Both attribute their success in life aside from their businesses to their wives.
In an HBO documentary made in 2017, Buffet gives much credit to his former wife Susan who passed away in 2004 who inspired him to become interested in civil rights, feminism and to donate a lot of his wealth during his lifetime.
Gates affirms that his wife Melinda has done the same thing in his conversation with Buffet at CU. He says that he and Melinda share the same ideals and goals in life. Gates also believes in surrounding himself with friends that bring out the best in him and vice versa.
Gates and Buffet have been friends since 1991 and both contribute philanthropically to better the lives of people around the world.
CNBC reports that research has found when people have a strong support system in place – good friends, family and especially life partners – they have less tendencies to become depressed and to isolate themselves socially and end up in poor health.
Surrounding yourself with good relationships and people who love you back is the secret and the ultimate test to a successfully lived life no matter the size of your bank account agrees Buffet and Gates.
