The United States Consumer Product Safety Commission has issued a recall of the 11-inch Forky plush toy out of concern of a potential choking hazard among children. Apparently, the Disney/Pixar Toy Story 4 plush toy has “googly” plastic eyes that can detach from the body, which apparently poses a choking risk. Disney has agreed to the voluntary recall, claiming that a manufacturing defect could cause the plastic eyes to detach.
The USCPSC, obviously, analyzes consumer products that could pose any type of risk, injury, or death to buyers in the United States. This includes toys.
The toy, of course, is based on the hand-made “Forky” character from the Disney and Pixar animated feature, Toy Story 4, voiced by actor Tony Hale. It has poseable arms and giant, rolling eyes. In the movie, the character “Forky” is a walking and talking figure made out of a spork and a few randomly discarded arts and crafts who spends most of his screen time convinced that he is no purpose as a toy.
According to the USCPSC agency recall notice, “Consumer should immediately take the recalled toy away from children and return it to any Disney Store retail location, Walt Disney World, or Disneyland Resort theme park retail store location for a full refund.”
It appears that more than 80,000 of these Disney/Pixar toys were sold in the United States market. Only about 650 have been sold in Canada. As with many of Disney’s products, the toys were made in China.
To announce its decision to join the recall action, Disney Parks tweeted, “We have decided to voluntarily recall the 11” Forky plush due to a manufacturing defect that could potentially pose a choking hazard to children under 3. Nothing is more important than the safety of our Guests and we ask that Guests return the item for a full refund by visiting any North American Disney Store or Disney Theme Parks store, calling 866-537-7649 or emailing [email protected].”
If any of this sounds familiar it might be that Walt Disney World started pulling the plush from store shelves last month. Perhaps this was in suspicion of the issue which, after investigation, would explain why we are now seeing Disney join the recall.
